Why your range game stays on the range

A passionate golfer on the transfer problem in golf practice: what forty years of motor-learning research explains, and what good Tour caddies have always practiced.

You stripe every 7-iron on the range. Six balls in a row, all painted at the 150 flag. You feel it in your hands — the strike, the compression, the slight draw.

Sunday morning, fourth hole, 152 yards in. Same club. You step up, take the same swing, and watch the ball end up nowhere near the distance or direction you intended.

It isn’t a swing problem. And it almost certainly isn’t because you didn’t warm up or because you didn’t have a clear picture of the shot you wanted to hit.

It’s a transfer problem — and there’s about forty years of sport-science research explaining exactly why it happens. And almost no consumer golf product addresses it.

This piece describes the gap, because once you understand it, you can’t unsee it.


The transfer problem is real, and well-documented

In motor-learning research, “transfer” is the technical term for whether a skill you’ve trained shows up in the situation you trained it for. The fact that range performance often doesn’t transfer to on-course performance is so universally observed in sports that it has its own subfield.

The bad news: most golfers practice in a way that is almost optimized to prevent transfer.

The good news: the fix isn’t to grind harder or to take more lessons. It’s to change the shape of your practice and to introduce something almost every weekend golfer is missing.

Let me walk through the three biggest reasons typical range practice misleads you.


Reason 1: Block practice feels productive but isn’t

The classic range session looks like this: pull a club, hit ten balls, switch clubs, hit ten balls. Same target, same lie, same routine, ten times in a row. This is what motor-learning researchers call blocked practice.

It feels great. The third shot with the 7-iron is better than the first. The seventh is better still. By the tenth you’ve grooved something.

And then you walk away with a false signal.

Decades of research starting with Battig (1979) and continuing through Shea & Morgan, Schmidt & Bjork, and many others, has shown that blocked practice produces better in-session performance but worse retention and transfer. The skill you grooved at rep nine doesn’t survive the gap to the next time you need it under different conditions.

The alternative — random or variable practice — feels worse during the session. You hit a 7-iron, then a wedge, then a hybrid; you switch targets; you imagine different lies. Performance drops in the moment. But the resulting skill transfers dramatically better.

Robert Bjork describes this as desirable difficulties: the conditions that feel hardest in practice are often the ones that build the most durable skill. Conversely, practice that feels smooth and fluent is often the least useful kind.

If you’ve ever wondered why the person whose shots on the range are the least convincing sometimes plays better than you, this is part of the answer.


Reason 2: Your attention is in the wrong place

Even if you fixed the blocked-practice problem, there’s a second trap most amateurs fall into without realizing.

Gabriele Wulf at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has spent her career on a question that sounds boring but isn’t: when you perform a movement, say a golf swing, where exactly is your attention?

She distinguishes two modes:

  • Internal focus — your attention is on your body. Keep your head down. Rotate your hips. Keep your hips stable. You’re micro-managing your mechanics.
  • External focus — your attention is on the effect you want to produce. Hit the back inside quadrant of the ball. Send it on a line over that tree. Land it on the front of the green.

Across more than a hundred studies, in golf, basketball, dart-throwing, balance tasks, and rehabilitation, external focus produces measurably better outcomes. The effect is robust, large, and the opposite of what most amateurs do when they’re trying hard.

Here’s the painful part: when you’re on the range thinking about your swing, you are training internal focus. When you’re on the course trying to actually pull off a shot, you need external focus.

In other words: you practice in one mode and perform in another. No wonder it sometimes feels like all that practice doesn’t move the needle on what you do during a round.


Reason 3: There is no consequence on the range

This is the most under-discussed reason, and very likely the most important.

A range shot has no consequence. A pulled wedge into the back-left bunker on the range is exactly identical, in your body and your nervous system, to a flushed wedge to two feet. Same noise, same followthrough, next ball.

A shot on the course has consequence. The bunker is real. The water is real. The triple-bogey is real. Your hands feel the difference.

Sian Beilock at the University of Chicago has done some of the clearest work on this in her book Choke and the underlying research: under pressure, working memory narrows, attentional focus shifts inward (back to internal mode — see above), and the very mechanics you grooved at low stakes start to break down.

If you have never trained your golf swing under any version of consequence, the first time consequence shows up — on the first tee, on the back nine of a competitive round, on a downhill putt for a personal record — is the moment your range game evaporates.

This is also why the popular advice “just relax, it’s just a shot” almost never works. Telling your nervous system there’s no pressure doesn’t make the pressure go away.

What works is inoculation: training under graded, manageable pressure often enough that pressure stops being a novel state. Range practice gives you zero inoculation.


The skill that isn’t on the launch monitor

Walk into a modern coaching session, or open most golf-improvement apps, and you see the same picture: data. Ball speed, spin rate, club path, attack angle, dispersion, strokes gained, putts per round. The dashboards are beautiful. The numbers are precise.

And they hide something important.

A launch monitor tells you that your last shot left the face at 152 mph with 2,800 rpm of spin and a club path of 1.4° in-to-out. What it does not tell you is:

  • What you were trying to do.
  • What you felt as you swung.
  • How the outcome compared to what you expected to happen.

Those three things are not nice-to-haves. In motor-learning research they are the actual substrate of skill development. The technical term is metacognition — awareness of your own awareness — and the research is consistent: golfers who can describe what they felt, what they intended, and how the outcome differed from the intent, learn faster than golfers who can’t.

A timing distinction matters here. This kind of self-perception is not the same as the internal-focus cues Reason 2 warned against. External focus applies during the swing. The metacognitive analysis — describing what you felt and intended — happens afterward. In the brief debrief between shots, not during them. The two modes are complementary, not competing.

This is also why the best lessons aren’t the ones where the coach lectures. They’re the ones where the coach asks: “What did that feel like? What were you trying to do?” The golfer who can answer — clearly, specifically — is the golfer who’ll improve. The one who shrugs and says “I dunno, just swung it” is stuck.

On the course, this matters more, not less. There is no launch monitor on the fourth tee. There are no club-path numbers in the rough at 145 yards. The only data you have is what your hands, your eyes, and your gut tell you. If you’ve never trained the skill of reading those signals, you walk into every consequential shot blind.

A coaching system that only feeds you objective numbers trains you to depend on the numbers. A coaching system that asks you what you felt, helps you put it into words, and reflects it back to you over time — that one trains you to read yourself.

And self-perception isn’t something you can measure. It’s something you can only practice — by saying it out loud.


What Tour caddies actually do (and it’s not what you think)

Watch a Tour caddie for an hour and you’ll realize their job is almost nothing like the image most people have. They are not bag-carriers, yardage-readers, or club-handers, at least not in any way that really matters. Those things are necessary but trivial. What they really do is something more interesting:

They externalize the player’s focus. “Land it short of the pin.” “Cover the bunker.” Caddies are constantly pulling attention away from the swing and onto the outcome. In those moments, they act like a live, breathing external-focus device.

They enforce consequence. A good caddie will not let a player drift into autopilot. Every shot has a reason. Every miss has a debrief. The shot you’re about to hit is the one you’ve been preparing for, and you’d better treat it that way.

They carry the cognitive load. Decision-making is exhausting. A Tour caddie offloads club selection, wind reading, percentages, and risk math, freeing the player to commit to a shot rather than deliberate a shot. Commitment is half the swing.

They remember. A great caddie remembers what worked yesterday, what missed left three holes ago, what the player has been working on, and what the player tends to do under pressure. They are a memory system in a person’s head.

Sadly, almost no amateur golfer gets to benefit from a “bodyguard” like that.


The gap

So here’s where we are.

A typical weekend golfer:

  • Practices in blocked mode (same club, same target, hit until it gets boring).
  • Trains internal focus (“keep my head down, rotate, keep the hips stable”).
  • Experiences zero consequence on the range.
  • Has no caddie, no live external focus, no memory layer, no accountability.

Then they show up on the course, on a high-pressure tee shot, and wonder why their range game has abandoned them.

The current consumer golf-tech market has not really addressed this. Launch monitors track ball flight but don’t change practice structure. GPS apps tell you yardages but don’t shape decisions. Lesson apps queue up swing videos but only show up once a week. Stats apps tell you that your wedge play is bad but don’t fix it. AI golf coaches review your swing video and give you internal-focus cues, which is exactly the wrong thing.

There is a missing layer between “lesson” and “round”. It’s the layer Tour players have built into their daily lives via their caddies, and amateurs simply don’t have.
